RHD Headlights

Hi all,

As all Alfa 90 owners know, the headlights are pretty rare, especially so for RHD cars. Here in Australia, I know of a number of Alfa 90s that were taken off the road and wrecked because the owners could not find headlights. Many of these vehicles suffered this fate because the glue on the headlight glass failed and the glass fell out onto the road and smashed.

Recently I checked my own vehicle and found that both the glass lenses were loose so I took the opportunity to get plastic moulds taken. I now have a number of plastic lenses that are exact replicas of the originals. From a distance of 1 metre, it is impossible to pick any difference between the original glass and the plastic copies. There might be some reduction in light but I think it would be less than 5% - I certainly can't pick the difference. The other advantage of the plastic lenses is they are more resistant to smashing from stones which are thrown up by other vehicles. After all, many modern vehicle have plastic lenses.

I have 3 extra sets of lenses which I will sell for what they cost me, AUD 70 each lens or AUD 140 for a set. Anyone in the UK needs to bear in mind that these are in Australia and freight costs will need to be considered. At this price this is certainly not a commercial enterprise, and I had to have a minimum of 5 sets made. If I'm inundated with inquiries I can always get some more made, although judging by the numbers I see on the register I think that is pretty unlikely.

It always seemed a shame to me that something so minor would keep a lovely old car like this off the road. Hopefully this might save a few from the scrapheap.

I'd be very interested in a set, please email me at sheldonmcintosh @ g m a i l. c o m (take out the spaces in the address, don't want to get spammed is all), would love to see some pics of them if you have some.

What are the legailties of running with these lenses do you know? I'm guessing it wouldn't be strictly legal? I'd love to put a set on my track car though, since it only gets used about 10 times a year and it's worth the risk, then I can keep a spare set of glass ones for the road car.

Excellent idea, look forward to seeing pics, I'm sure I could have a few more people interested as well.

Cheers
Sheldon
